Graves disease, also known as thyroid eye disease, is an auto-immune condition that weakens the thyroid gland by secreting an excess amount of thyroid hormone, resulting in a possible thyroid enlargement or creating a hyper-metabolic state.
An over stimulated thyroid gland may cause an increase in heart rate, anxiety, exhaustion, and weight loss.
An under-stimulated thyroid gland can cause fatigue, weight gain, puffy eyes, and depression.
In either case, one can suffer unexplained or fluctuating blurred visual acuity and a weakened capacity to focus.
Here are some ways I help re-balance the thyroid gland:
Essential Oils
1. Laurel Leaf: Queen of the Lymphatics, helps open up the 5th (throat chakra), helps you find the courage to speak your truth
2. Rosemary Verbenone: Overall endocrine regulator, helps memory and mental clarity, balances the thyroid hormone.
3. Myrtle: Known to balance both Hypo/Hyper thyroid. Also helps increase adrenal function. Before applying the essences, do a test patch below the wrist on the arm and watch for a reaction. Apply 3-4 drops of each essential oil, twice a day on throat area.
Nutritional Recommendations:
Hyper condition:
Eat cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and radishes.
Hypo condition:
Ingest 1 tablespoon per day of the super food Maca powder which is known to balance the endocrine system. Avoid eating cruciferous vegetables as these foods can cause severe discomfort when your body attempts to break them down. In some cases these effects can be neutralized if the vegetables are fermented.
Take 2-4 tablespoons of coconut fat each day.
If constipated, increase amount of probiotics.
Eat one tablespoon of goji berries every day.
Take 2-3000mg of DHA essential fatty acids per day.
Take natural iodine every day.
With any imbalance with the thyroid gland or the endocrine system, people may have difficulty converting Beta carotene to Vitamin A. Also, I recommend supplementing with a liquid Vitamin A of 5,000 IU’s to make up for this imbalance.
Bottom-line, our eyes can be highly influenced by an imbalance in our thyroid gland.
