In this show, I speak about the auspicious dream I had while leading a month long retreat at The Esalen Institute in California about how we as men in our culture and better blend our masculine and feminine qualities to help heal each other and Mother Earth. Today I want to talk about what Matthew Fox refers to as “The Green Man.” I first met Matthew Fox at a conference called Creation Spirituality at the Omega Institute almost 25 years ago. He is a mystic and has blended the traditions of science with spirituality. He has a fierceness that defends the struggle for social, gender, ecological, and racial justice. His website is: www.matthewfox.org.
In his book: The Hidden Spirituality of Men he discusses THE GREEN MAN. He speaks about this archetype of the man who is rediscovering the importance of nature as a healing balm for us. The Green Man according to Fox is about accessing the wisdom of re-defining our role in connecting to the essence of nature especially from the fifth chakra of our voice, the fourth chakra of our heart, and our sixth chakra which is our intuitive vision. The Green Man is the part of our masculine which holds many characteristics:
- Heliotropic
- Slowing down
- Returning to ones’ roots
- Connecting to the Cosmos
- Honoring the Rhythms of nature which include the sun-moon cycles, the seasons, the changing constellations in the sky based on the time of year and embodying those rhythms in life. Can we connect to our own rhythms or are we always reacting the rhythms of the world as our measuring stick. As we return to a more “green man”, we connect to our wetness, our lymph and filtration systems which feed our own inner wetlands, and helps us reconnect to a deeper part of ourselves which includes more sensitivity, emotions, sensations, and more receptivity.
- Silence and introspection so the Green Man gets to know himself.
- The bark and flower… When the Green Man is embracing himself, he embodies both the bark of the tree (which shows us our resiliency and endurance) as well as the flower tops which helps him open his heart and appreciate the arts and beauty. Cinnamon Bark and Jasmine are two medicinal essences that remind me to carry this broadness in my everyday consciousness.
As a man when we embrace the green part of ourselves, we can appreciate and honor the living Earth and connect to our imagination on what is possible.
As a Green Man we experience our emotions and don’t run from them.
As a Green Man we can stand up to addictions that cloud the soul, and instead we can detox inside to be a clearer light.
And finally a Green Man embraces the divine masculine and the divine feminine and that we live in a sacred marriage within ourselves which influences the outer world to discover that marriage.
